That New Apartment Smell January 21, 2014

Forgot to post this (real date was September 8)… I’m real good at this bloggin’ stuff.

Apartment Updates:ย Still no couch, and most likely no couch for a month. Sadly this means that any housewarming festivities will have to wait until October. Also, sadly enough, no decor is up yet and we more boxes lying around than I thought we did. I think Dan and I have reached the point where if we don’t earnestly start addressing the last 15% of our stuff, it’ll keep sitting in boxes, gathering dust and taking up space, for the rest of our year-long lease. The good part, at least, is that we have more space than we know what to do with! And, I’m loving this apartment the longer I stay in it!

Ninja Edit #1: COUCH YAY! We also had our housewarming party in October which made me feel popular ๐Ÿ™‚ Our decorations are up and we probably have about 10% of our stuff remaining in boxes? All in all, a success I’d say.

Cooking Updates:ย

  1. Honey & Soy Porkchops: I tried to make this recipe, which you may notice is actually called “sticky honey & soy porkchops”. Unfortunately my sauce just wasn’t up to being sticky. ย It turned out just fine though! The porkchops are accompanied by a bed of lettuce, quinoa (out of a box), and microwave-steamed broccoli.

  1. Smoked Salmon on Bagels: Okay okay, so this isn’t really a “cooking” update since it didn’t require any cooking on our parts but I thought I would post it anyway! Dan and I got some awesomely delicious local strawberries so I made an equally awesomely delicious smoothie with plain yogurt, fresh strawberries, and frozen blackberries, mangoes, and peaches. I got some bagels (Blueberry and Everything) from Bruegger’s, a convenient 0.6 miles away from the apartment, and to that we added some salad greens, chive and onion cream cheese and smoked salmon. I couldn’t resist posting this because we ended up eating breakfast on our little balcony, which I absolutely adore.

Ninja Edit #2: Edited to include pictures.

Exercise Updates:ย

  1. I went running for the first time in about 6 weeks this morning. Just a 2 mile run but I did a little bit of exploring and found the Somerville Community Path! I only went to Davis but apparently it goes past Davis and all the way to Alewife – an adventure for another day. I think I really need to start exploring the neighborhood, it’s all a blur to me, and I should really familiarize myself with my surroundings.

Ninja Edit #3: Note to self, stop being so lazy in the wintertime.

Trader Joe’s Orange Mandarin Chicken July 5, 2012

Although I didn’t make a second meal in the month of June, I did make orange mandarin chicken! Twice! I put some red pepper flakes and broccoli — does that count as making a meal?

Looks about as good as crappy Chinese food to me! Except this is cheaper and healthier (I think/assume). This weekend Dan and I are going to make turkey pad thai which will be quite an adventure since:

1. I don’t associate turkey with pad thai

2. Pad thai is notoriously difficult to make

Adventure time!

Also, as a surprise blog feature this week — pictures from the zoo!

Ninja edit: I almost forgot! I am hard at work trying to finish my cross-stitch pillowcase and sort of learning how to crochet. I say “sort of learning” because now I remember why I stopped trying to crochet in the first place! It’s difficult and I much prefer sewing which I find much simpler and easier to deal with but I am determined to at least make a granny square… at some point. I also went jogging twice in the past week and a half — an improvement over not doing anything at all.

Chicken with Black Bean Sauce and Pesto Pasta (II) June 27, 2010

Dan came over this weekend and besides beating me in bowling (which everyone else also did), we cooked! We made, or maybe I should say he made… since I really only cut up some vegetables. But anyways, we made chicken with black bean sauce. We cut up some garlic, onions, and broccoli and just basically made a semi stir-fry. We “marinated” the chicken in a little bit of soy sauce, garlic, and black bean sauce and then cooked it and put the vegetables in later. The chicken broth/corn starch sauce combo didn’t quite thicken up like we wanted it to but it’s okay because it still tasted DELICIOUS.

Here’s a picture of how awful I did in bowling. Dan was “Ugly Face” (courtesy of Chris Belcher), I was “Granny” thanks to Josh who calls me that because I go to bed early, Julio was “Julisha”, Chris was “Haole Boy” courtesy of Dan (it means white boy and is an almost derogatory term in Hawaiian), Riz was “Captain” (I have no idea why) and I think Josh was just Josh).

Here’s the chicken with black bean sauce. I’m definitely going to be making this recipe later on in the summer and I’ll try to make the sauce thicker. The drinks that Dan and I had (with mine being very diluted) was Pimms and ginger ale. I’ll have to try Pimms with some apple cider next time.

Today I tried pasta again, this time with some pesto, cherry tomatoes, garlic, mushrooms, and avocado. I think there was a little too much avocado even though I really love avocado but the creaminess got to be too much at the end. I’ll have the rest for lunch tomorrow! I definitely am glad I bought some pesto instead of alfredo sauce since we have Bahsil, our basil plant in case I want to add anymore basil. I also like the taste of pesto more than alfredo. Finally, success with pasta!

Green beans, Pesto Pasta, and BBQ (Oh my!) June 25, 2010

It’s been a while since my last post but I haven’t done much cooking since then. I’ve actually been mooching off of other people like my parents, my friends, and my housemates. However, I’ve decided to come up with a cooking plan for next week so I won’t be mooching off of them. I think I’ll make some curry (green or yellow) and maybe I’ll have another try at pasta, either with pesto or an alfredo sauce.

Since my last post, I did make some green beans and beef… the typical way that I’ve been making all my stir frys but I like it and it’s easy.

I think you can probably tell but I really like green vegetables with some sort of meat with rice. It’s just really very comforting.

Last Thursday, I went over to Devon’s house (which is so amazingly new and shiny) and we tried making some pesto for pasta but it didn’t work out so well because we didn’t have a food processor, only a blender. We also added too much garlic and cheese and not enough basil…. oops!! It still turned out okay though and no one got sick which is always a plus!

Those tomatoes were so good. I really don’t even like tomatoes and they were good. I hear from the other intern that I work with (Courtney) that those tomatoes, pasta, avocado and alfredo sauce work really well together which is what I think I’ll try next week.

I don’t have any pictures of the FABULOUS BBQ that my boys (aka Josh and Riz) put together two days ago but it was amazing! They were so adorable. I got home and and they had gone to East Side Market and were making burgers. The kitchen was of course a disaster zone (and still is) but it’s the price you pay for good food I suppose. The burgers, even though the first batch was a little overdone, were so moist and juicy. I think the boys put in onions, garlic, ground beef (obviously), bleu cheese, and an egg. We also had hot dogs and some grilled vegetables. We and by we I mean Josh, Riz, Itsuka mostly put together the grill and although we didn’t get to eat until maybe 8 at night, it was all worth it. I got so lucky with my apartment-mates this summer. Even though I haven’t seen Putzer in a week, he’s really nice and funny and Josh and Riz are incredibly amusing and fun and CLEAN!

Dan will be here this weekend so we’re going bowling with a bunch of people tonight and then we’re cooking dinner onย  Saturday! ๐Ÿ™‚ I think I’m finally getting into the swing of things. My internship is going really well, I’m excited to be a part of the RIte care outreach effort because I actually designed a hypothetical intervention to increase Medicaid/CHIP enrollment for Hispanic kids so it’s nice to see real life applications of what I do in school. In other running news, I’m finally up to a half an hour which means that I can officially start a half-marathon training schedule but I think I’ll just slowly ease my way up to 45 minutes. I also want to start weights sometime soon but that means I must first procure some weights. In terms of my summer reading list, I’m making my way through A Short History of Nearly Everything and so far it’s really good. I’d definitely recommend this as a good read too. I love reading about crazy scientists. Other things coming up on my reading list include the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Watchmen, other comics that Riz will hopefully lend me, and some books that Wendy mentioned. I have yet to start crafting but I still have time.

Sorry for the long and delayed entry but hopefully I’ll be blogging more often now that my schedule is nailed down! ๐Ÿ™‚

Asparagus and Chicken Stir-Fry June 13, 2010

This post is way overdue but here are pictures from the asparagus and chicken stir-fry I made on Thursday night. The chicken was just cooked the same way as the other post and the asparagus was boiled first and then put in the pan along with the chicken with a little bit of oyster sauce. I think I’m way better at making stir-frys than I am with other more “American” dishes. Also, it’s pretty hard to mess up a stir-fry. I was so proud of the asparagus since it was perfectly cooked (at least in my opinion).

In other news, I’ve kinda kept up with running. There have been a couple of rainy days here so I haven’t been running those days. I finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it was FANTASTIC. It was so well-written and there were lots of plot twists. I think next on my list is A Short History of Nearly Everything. My internship has been going well, I haven’t started on any major projects yet. I’m just doing a little bit of research for a community outreach project and regular intern stuff like filing papers etc. I really like everyone at work though, they’re all fun and very casual.

First Day of Work! June 8, 2010

Today was my first day of work and what a long 8:30-5 day it was. I would definitely consider today a success though in terms of my summer plans, with the exception of cooking. I woke up at 6 to go for a (very) short run and then got ready for work which included making my own lunch! The other intern (Courtney) and I ended up observing a “strategic planning meeting” all day which was really interesting but at times rather mundane and tedious… policy formation at its best! I’m really excited to start working on projects that will finally pertain to what I want to do later. Everyone at the office seems really nice and I love the atmosphere of non-profits. Also, lunchtime is great since I can eat outside in Kennedy Plaza. I also really like Courtney, we get along well and she seems really nice. She’s a math and public policy concentrator, an interesting mix to say the least. Overall, today was a good day albeit extremely tiring. I’ll also have most Fridays off with the exception of the next two weeks. I got blisters from my super cute (short) heels though ๐Ÿ˜ฆ That will teach me to think that I can walk the hilly streets of Providence in heels.

My run was quite short this morning, I think my body just isn’t used to physical activity right now. I have tomorrow off but I’m gonna try and wake up semi-early like around 7:30 or 8 and run again. I need to get into some sort of schedule. I’m gonna start really slowly but I feel good for starting! ๐Ÿ™‚

Itsuka found some magnetic poetry left behind by the previous residents and lo and behold the box was the “dirty” version! Disclaimer: the naked man magnet came with the fridge.

The first sentence says “directions to being happy” and the second sentence says “believe in your dreams.”ย  the next couple of sentences are not so innocent…

In terms of cooking… I haven’t yet! I know I know, don’t yell at me guys! I will be cooking (for sure!) tomorrow though because I won’t have a delicious Whole Foods sandwich to munch on and I won’t have a fantastic boyfriend who visits me and brings me food. Plus I also have really do have time tomorrow to cook. I’m planning to make “Penne with Vegetables.” It seems like a no-fail recipe…hopefully. The picture doesn’t really look that great but maybe mine will turn out better… (haha!)

I think I’ll be doing a lot of reading this summer. I’m finishing up Omnivore’s Dilemma and then Itsuka has graciously let me borrow The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I’ll probably read A Short History of Nearly Everything after that. Of course I will also probably be playing Rock Band. I’m also really trying to eat healthy this summer and just do things that a public health major should do… like go to a primary care doctor…

Anyways, this entry was rather long but tomorrow’s should be short and to the point — penne!
